Updated January 24 @ 10:09 a.m. PT: As of around 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET, Slack appears to be back up and running like normal. Carry on!

If you rely on Slack to communicate at your job and are having issues with the app, you aren’t alone. At 8:37 a.m. PT / 11:37 a.m. ET, Slack confirmed that it’s down and experiencing “service wide connection issues.”

Prior to Slack’s confirmation, Down Detector saw a huge spike in reports of Slack experiencing connection issues. There was a smaller spike around 5:00 p.m. ET yesterday afternoon, with a much larger spike starting at around 11:00 a.m. ET today.

Per the Slack Status website, Slack has identified “Connections” and “Workflows” issues. For both of them, Slack says, “Some customers are encountering issues connecting and running workflows Slack.”

Slack also confirms that it’s “actively looking into this” and will “report back as more information becomes available.”

In other words, if you’re having trouble logging into or using Slack this morning, this is why. It’s unclear when Slack will have things back up and running, but we’ll keep an eye out for any updates and let you know when things are back to normal.

What is RCS messaging? Everything you need to know about the SMS successor
Google Messages app on a Pixel 8 Pro, showing an RCS Chat message thread.

It may surprise you that traditional text messaging on cell phones has existed for over 30 years. Hence, it's no surprise that the technology seems archaic in a world of smartphones that now use built-in services like Apple's iMessage on the iPhone and a plethora of third-party apps like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

In fact, it was the limitations of the legacy technologies used by text messaging that gave rise to these other messaging services. Traditional Short Messaging Services (SMS) and Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) offered by carriers were incapable of supporting even longer messages and high-resolution images, not to mention features like true group messaging, read receipts, reactions, and typing indicators — all of which have become table stakes among modern smartphone messaging apps.

The Google Pixel 8 just got its first update. Here’s what’s new
Holding the Google Pixel 8 Pro in front of a bush.

Google has started seeding a new software update for its Pixel phones, which also happens to be the first one for its latest Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro models The update notes don’t mention the arrival of any new features, but the update does fix crucial problems that users have been complaining about in online forums for months and apply to the Pixel 8 series as well as its predecessors.
At the top of the list is a solution for display- and graphics-related woes, including the problem of “a green flash when the display is turning off in certain conditions.” Google’s post mentions a specific scenario where the green screen issue appears, but users have been reporting it for a while.
Moreover, the “green goblin for Pixels” manifests itself in various ways. One user shared an image of the Pixel 8 Pro on Reddit with a vertical green line running across the screen. Others mention random screen flashing or a permanent tint on the panels, both partial and full-screen. The reports date back at least a couple of years and seem to affect phones as old as the Pixel 6 series.
