The holiday season may be over, but awards season is just heating up. The Golden Globes and Emmy Awards have been given out, and the next major event on the calendar is the Academy Awards. But who’s competing, and who is staying home this year?

The 2024 Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and as expected, Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed blockbuster about the creation of the atomic bomb, Oppenheimer, leads the pack. The other half of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, Barbie, did well, too, getting nominations in the Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor categories.

Other movies that were recognized include Alexander Payne’s new Christmas classic The Holdovers with Paul Giamatti, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Lady Frankenstein sex comedy Poor Things with Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon with Leonardo Di Caprio and Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper’s biopic Maestro starring the actor as the great composer Leonard Bernstein.

From atomic bombs (Oppenheimer, Asteroid City) to atomic blondes (Barbie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour), 2023 was a year when cinema looked ahead by going back to the past. With reliable franchises like Marvel, DC, Indiana Jones, and Transformers failing and streaming still a question mark, the movie landscape expanded, allowing for a Hayao Miyazaki film about death to be the number one movie in America and for a three-hour movie filmed partly in black and white about nuclear physics to become a summertime critical and commercial smash.

It's a weird time for movies, but it was also a great year for films of all kinds: American ones, international ones, comedies, horror, sci-fi, dramas...heck, even a Godzilla movie (Godzilla Minus One) was excellent. I saw hundreds of movies this year, and to make a 10-best list this year was incredibly hard but always enjoyable. These are the 10 best movies of 2023.

Itā€™s been a banner year for movies. Putting aside the uncertainty and turmoil caused by the yearā€™s Hollywood labor strikes, 2023 has delivered more great movies than any other year in recent memory. The same goes for the yearā€™s screen performances ā€” of which there have been so many that putting together a list like this feels like a bit of a foolhardy endeavor. After all, how can one talk about this yearā€™s big-screen performances without mentioning Charles Meltonā€™s heartbreaking, fragile turn in May December, Cailee Spaenyā€™s time-bending, quietly expressive lead performance in Priscilla, or Rachel McAdams' spellbinding supporting work in Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret.

What about Teo Yoo and John Magaroā€™s dueling performances in Past Lives? They are so full of insecurity and yearning that they make the act of rooting for one over the other an impossible task.Ā And thatā€™s to say nothing of Adam Driver and Penelope Cruzā€™s colossal lead turns in Michael Mannā€™s Ferrari, without which the film would fizzle and fail. Suffice it to say, there were many worthy contenders left off this list. At the same time, itā€™s hard to think about 2023 without considering the actors and performances listed below.
