Remedy Entertainment now owns the rights to the Control franchise

Remedy Entertainment, the developer behind 2019’s Control and critically acclaimed games like Alan Wake 2, now fully owns the rights to the Control franchise. That means the Finnish studio now has full, for the lack of a better word, control over the future of this series, including its sequel and multiplayer spin-off.

Previously, the rights to the franchise were owned by 505 Games, a publisher you may know for its hand in publishing Ghostrunner 2 and Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising. According to a message for investors, Remedy will pay 17 million euros to acquire “all publishing, distribution, marketing, and other rights” for Control 2 and a multiplayer project codenamed Condor. When it comes to the original Control, 505 Games will remain the game’s publisher until December 31 of this year and control business-to-business deals for that game until an undisclosed date.

“As part of Remedy’s long-term strategy to have more ownership over our business and the IPs we have created, we have gotten back all rights for Control and the in-development Condor and Control 2,” Remedy CEO Tero Virtala commented. “Having complete ownership over the Control franchise gives us the freedom to decide the best path forward. We will consider our options carefully, knowing that Control is considered an attractive franchise by many partners.”

Essentially, Remedy Entertainment wants to have more direct influence over what happens with Control games in the future and will now seek out new publishing partners for these two upcoming titles. The influx of cash will likely also help 505 Games’ parent company, Digital Bros, who laid off 30% percent of its staff last year “to align with the evolving competitive environment in the medium to long-term to ensure maximum operational efficiency.”

Control 2 and Condor haven’t been shown off publicly yet and don’t have release dates at this time. That said, Virtala says the games have “progressed well in recent months and we expect these projects to reach their next development stages during the first half of 2024.”

Collectibles are nothing new to the Alan Wake series. The first game's primary trinkets you would be scrounging around for were coffee thermoses, but those now serve as save spots in Alan Wake 2. What replaces them are several new types, such as Cult Stashes and Nursery Rhymes, but those are more puzzles than pure collectibles. The Alex Casey Lunchboxes are pure, hidden objects that just need to be found to unlock -- no puzzles or keys required. Aside from the trophy/achievement you get for finding them all, what they hold inside is more than worth the effort of collecting them. No, it isn't someone's leftover sandwich, but precious Manuscript Fragments required to upgrade Saga's guns. We've all lost track of Lunchboxes in the past, so here is where you can find them all in Alan Wake 2.

Across every major zone you go to as Saga in Alan Wake 2, you can get a total of 21 Alex Casey Lunchboxes. Each one has a few Manuscript Fragments and a little cryptic or creepy note attached for some additional lore.

Remnant 2’s The Awakened King DLC goes bigger and bolder

Soulslike shooter Remnant 2 was the gaming surprise of the summer thanks to some fantastic boss battles and an engaging run structure that enticed players to hunt for new loot. While it already has plenty of replay value, Gunfire Games and Gearbox Entertainment confirmed plans to support the game with substantial DLC for at least a year before Remnant 2 even released. Now, we know more about its first piece of paid DLC that launches on November 14: The Awakened King.

Remnant 2: The Awakened King takes place in the universe of Losomn and pits players against The One True King, a powerful ruler corrupted by the root, who has now teleported his castle on top of a coastal city. Ahead of The Awakened King’s reveal and release, Digital Trends had the chance to see the DLC in action and speak with game designers Ben Cureton and Cindy To about their creation. The Awakened King seems poised to double down on enhancing the best parts of Remnant 2 in what may be the game's biggest location yet.
Upping the ante
The Awakened King is a new campaign available to anyone who has unlocked Losomn in Remnant 2. It’s a bit bigger than a single world and brings with it a new story, an Archetype called The Ritualist, and a host of new weapons, items, bosses, enemies, affixes, and mores. Digital Trends’ look at the DLC began in one of its earlier areas, with Cureton slowly navigating the city's lower levels and taking on new enemies, like one that can climb on walls and ceilings and spit acid.

Remedy has been one of the biggest studios to push the inclusion of multimedia in gaming. The first Alan Wake featured short TV episodes of a fictional show called Night Springs that players could discover and watch, Control added in real-life footage in various projections, and Quantum Break had fully live-action "cutscenes." Alan Wake 2 adds more TVs to the world in two different forms -- Koskela Brother Commercials and Writer's Journey videos. The former are found with Saga and the latter with Alan, and both have their own trophy/achievement related to finding them all. As a bonus, they are entertaining enough on their own to warrant seeking them out. Don't touch that dial, because we're going to show you where to find every TV in Alan Wake 2.

Starting off with Saga, there are six commercials to find over the course of the game. All you need to do is approach the TV for it to start, and you get credit for them as soon as they begin playing, so you really don't have to watch them through to the end.

Head into the police station before the end of Return 3 and go into the employee lounge. Note: This commercial is missable if you do not get it before the end of Return 3.
